Projecttitel
THE GAMBIA ASSOCIATION OF THE PHYSICALLY DISABLED (GAPD) PROFILE.
Projectlocatie
Banjul en Serrekunda GAMBIA

Historie/Beschrijving:
GAPD is the National Organization of the physically disabled created in 1983 to advocate and promote measures for their integration in the mainstream of the Gambian society. The present economic situation of the Gambia is such that poverty is increasing within society and the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. Persons with Physical disabilities are undoubtedly doubly disadvantaged by poverty and disability and are often the poorest of the poor. Traditionally, they are excluded from opportunities available to others, for example, access to education, skills training, employment and a host of others.
GAPD advocates for the creation of an enabling environment through the promotion of equal rights and full participation of physically disabled people in national development and to seek opportunities for the individual development of members.
Currently, GAPD as an organization is involved in three areas to address the need of people with physical disabilities. They are:
1. Education sponsorship for children of people with physical disabilities and physically disabled children.
2. Advocacy for the inclusion of the needs of people with physical disabilities in the national development policies or programmes.
3. The provision of skills training for women and girls with physical disabilities in tailoring. The women and girls project started in 2003. Since then, the project has trained twenty-five disabled women and girls at our workshop in Serrekunda. Of these, twenty have established their own workshops through assistance from micro-finance institutions.
GAPD have been in existence for 25 years and has a board made up of physically disabled people who face the same conditions. We worked in partnership with various institutions and NGOs like department of Social Welfare, VSO, GFD, GOVI, TANGO, CU (concern universal) as well as net working. Thus we have wide range of experience in managing projects. As such we are in a good position to expand our activities.

3. Donations for education sponsorship.
A donation of 450 euro’s would pay for a Childs education up to grade 12. In terms of the women’s project,

4. Proposal for a Vehicle
We urgently need an appropriate vehicle to facilitate our movement to reach to our members. Our board members are made up of people with physical disabilities and it is very difficult to access public transport for people who are wheelchair users to get to the provinces where our branches are.
Without access to vehicle, it is very difficult even to network with partner organizations or potential donors or visit to projects and potential members and their families.
Local taxi drivers frequently would not stop to pick a wheelchair user. Only about 15% of mini buses, which are the main mode of public transport, can accommodate wheelchair users.
It should be a vehicle that can carry wheel chair users preferably with automatic gear and roof rack. Ideally we would like a small van, which can carry 10 – 15 people as we can also use it to generate income. The income would be used to maintain and run the vehicle and if there is any surplus to help run our office.
If the vehicle was a pick up, we would use the government annual subvention for the up keep of the vehicle.

GAPD’s future plans include:
1. To re-establish Tricycle Production
2. To develop the landed property of GAPD to house all the units of the association
Without support GAPD will be unable to reach to the people who could benefit from our work.
